Dortmund vs Gladbach is live in 100+ countries on September 19: here's where to watch it

September 18, 2020 By Michelle Bonsu
The latest edition of the Borussen derby will come early this year, as Dortmund and Gladbach lock horns on matchday one on Saturday, September 19th.

Preview: Dortmund vs Gladbach

Having had to settle for second place last season as Bayern ran away with the league title, die Schwarzgelben will once again attempt to unseat the Bavarian titans as the champions of Germany. With Bayern crushing Schalke 8-0 in the 2020/2021 Bundesliga season opener earlier today, Lucien Favre's side will come into their upcoming clash with Gladbach knowing that they will want to kick off proceedings in the right fashion.

Bayern have made it clear that although they had a shorter summer break following their Champions League triumph, they are showing no signs of stopping down. Meanwhile, Dortmund, who finished last season on a foul note by losing 4-0 to Hoffenheim, have had their ups and downs in pre-season, but recently cruised to a 5-0 win over lower-tier side Duisburg in the first round of this year's DFB-Pokal. Five different players were among the goalscorers: new signing Jude Bellingham, Jadon Sancho, American youngster Giovanni Reyna, Thorgan Hazard and skipper Marco Reus, who will hope to stay fit this season after consistently battling injuries for years.

Sancho, although heavily linked with a move back to England to feature for Manchester United, is still very much a Dortmund player as of now, and will feature in this upcoming game. Both Hazard and Reus will be certainly looking to taking on their former club when Gladbach arrive at Signal Iduna Park on Saturday. And after becoming the Dortmund's youngest ever goalscorer by opening his account in the DFB-Pokal, Bellingham will be looking forward to lining up in the starting XI - and perhaps even grabbing his first Bundesliga goal in the process.

Gladbach, who pipped Leverkusen to fourth place last term and were only four points behind second-placed Dortmund in the table, also come into this match having eased to a straight-forward victory in the DFB Pokal. Marco Rose's men made mincemeat of minnows Oberneuland in their first round clash, picking up a resounding 8-0 victory and will be hoping to finally end their frustrating run against Dortmund that has seen them lose their last ten meetings.

Team news: Dortmund vs Gladbach

Dortmund: Dan-Axel Zagadou is out with a knee injury. He's joined on the injury list by Marcel Schmelzer, who will be out for the long haul following knee surgery, as well as Tobias Raschl, who is recovering from a muscle injury. Both Mateu Morey and Nico Schulz are still nursing injuries and thus are major doubts for this match.

Gladbach: Midfielder Denis Zakaria is a doubt due to fitness issues, as well as Marcus Thuram and Alassane Plea, but both young strikers will be hoping to make an appearance should they pass fitness tests.  New signing Valentino Lazaro, however, is a definite absentee for this game due to a thigh injury. Aditional players who are in doubt include Laszlo Benes and Breel Embolo, both of whom are struggling with ankle issues.

Match facts: Dortmund vs Gladbach

  • However, Gladbach have won their last three games in the Bundesliga (from last season) while Dortmund lost two of their final three matches, including their most recent home game against Hoffenheim (4-0)
