The Red Devils will kickstart their Premier League season by hosting Roy Hodgson's men at Old Trafford on Saturday.

 Match Preview

Manchester United will welcome Crystal Palace to Old Trafford on Saturday for their first game of the 2020/2021 Premier League season. The Red Devils were initially scheduled to make a trip to Turf Moor to take on Burnley in their opening fixture of the campaign but had the game postponed after the FA agreed to hand them an extended break following their participation in the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League.

For Solskjaer and his men, they will hope to continue from where they left things off last season. A remarkable run of form after the league was restored saw the Old Trafford outfit securing Champions League qualification this season. Despite dropping some vital points with draws along the way, they kept it late to pip Leicester City to the third position on the last day of the season.

A new dawn has arrived and, this time, the objective for Manchester United is to get as close to the Premier League title as possible following a seven-year drought. However, achieving this looks a tad unrealistic as the club is yet to add fresh legs to their roster to mount a proper challenge against their rivals. With a few weeks left for the transfer window to close, the Reds have only recruited Donny Van de Beek from Ajax and are yet to wrap up the move for Jadon Sancho who still remains their No.1 transfer target.

Moving away from recruitments, the statistics suggest that United should not struggle much coming up against Crystal Palace on Saturday. They head into the clash with a 14-game unbeaten run without defeat which stretches back to January. Their only preparatory fixture, however, did not go according to plan as they picked up a 1:0 defeat to Aston Villa in the friendly. Still, they should be a handful for a Palace side that has already started its league campaign on a good note.

The Eagles hosted and defeated Southampton at the Selhurst Park in their first game of the season, thanks to Wilfried Zaha's lone-goal. But they suffered their biggest slump yet on Monday, losing their EFL Cup Round 2 clash with Bournemouth via penalty shoot outs.

So far, Palace have won just four of their last 10 outings, losing four and drawing the remaining two games. Nevertheless, they should be buoyed by the fact that they won more away games in last season's campaign than both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur. In addition, the acquisition of Michy Batshuayi on loan from Chelsea and the signing of Eberechi Eze and co should give the team a renewed sense of optimism coming up against Manchester United.

Team news

Paul Pogba faces a late fitness test to be ready for Saturday's clash with Crystal Palace. The Frenchman recently recovered after contracting the coronavirus and was, as result, late in joining the pre-season preparations. On the treatment table, Manchester United have only Axel Tuanzebe and Phil Jones working their way up to recovery.

For Crystal Palace, Gary Cahill, Patrick van Aanholt, James Tomkins and Nathan Ferguson are all out of the encounter with injuries. Christian Benteke and Connor Wickham are also unavailable. On a positive note, Jairo Riedewald could be in contention after recovering from the knock he picked up last week.

Predicted starting XI

  • Manchester United: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw; Matic, Van de Beek, Pogba, Fernandes; Rashford; Martial.

  • Crystal Palace: Guaita; Ward, Kouyate, Dann, Mitchell; Eze, McCarthy, McArthur, Zaha; Batshuayi, Ayew.
