MLS news and transfers
Argentine forward Gonzalo Higuain arrived at Miami last week and will be the highest-paid player in MLS according to the Miami Herald. The former Juventus striker is expected to earn at least $7 million per year. Italian journalist Nicolo Schira reported that "El Pipita" signed a two-year deal through 2022 and received a $2 million exit payout from Juventus. Fans are still waiting for Inter Miami to announce the 32-year-old.
Forward Zdenek Ondrasek is a fan favorite amongst FC Dallas supporters, but his time in the MLS is done. After some time away from the team due to personal matters, "Kobra" is headed to THE Czech Republic to play for FC Viktoria Plzen. His transfer was announced on Sunday, Sept. 13. Ondrasek scored nine goals and recorded three assists in 22 games.
Moving from FC Dallas to rivals Houston Dynamo, Honduran forward Alberth Elis might join center-back Reggie Cannon at Boavista FC in Portugal. Cannon's move to Boavista was made official last week and FC Dallas received $3 million. Dynamo head coach Tab Ramos hinted that Elis might be on his way to Europe when he was asked about the transfer rumor.
"there's a good possibility that he goes overseas," said Ramos. "I know that overall, that's what he wants."
Toronto FC announced the loan acquisition of 21-year-old Tony Gallacher from Liverpool on Monday. The Scottish international was a regular for the U-23 Liverpool side at the left-back position. He will serve as a backup for Justin Morrow, who is the only natural left-back in the team.
Game of the Week: Sporting Kansas City vs FC Dallas
Western Conference opponents Sporting Kansas City and FC Dallas will face-off on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
Sporting KC leads the Western Conference with 20 points and game in hand over the Seattle Sounders, who are in second place with 18 points. Meanwhile, FC Dallas is in ninth place with 13 points, a spot and a point away from clinching playoffs, and with two games in hand. Sporting KC and Dallas drew their last game 1-1 on Sept. 2.
Sporting Kansas City
The Wizards finally broke their four-game winless streak when they defeated Minnesota United 1-0 on Sunday. In fact, Minnesota United is the only team that SKC has beaten since the regular season restart, winning 2-1 on Aug. 21. Somehow, Someway, Kansas City remains at the top of the Western Conference despite its 2W-2L-2D since the start of Phase 1.
Manager Peter Vermes has enjoyed his mix of young and veteran players, but it was the veterans who secured the 1-0 win over Minnesota last time out. Thirty-four-year-old Right-back Graham Suzi and 30-year-old right-winger Johnny Russell combined in the 80th minute to grant Kansas City the win. However, the young core of midfielders consisting of Gianluca Busio, Felipe Hernandez and Gadi Kinda helped Sporting KC to control the game and secure the win.
FC Dallas
Dallas needs consistency in order to reach the playoffs. Eight teams in the west will qualify for a playoff spot. The Toros find themselves in ninth place with four games to play. One of the games will be played at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas, on Wednesday, and the next against SKC on Saturday.
With that being said, there is little room for mistakes for the Toros this week. A loss can see them out of playoff contention. Having lost quality players in center-back Reggie Cannon and forward Zdenek Ondrasek, manager Luchi Gonzalez will hope that his current roster can keep up with the competition.

Talk of the Week: Air quality issues on the West Coast
The gloomy, orange skies projecting over cities in the Western United States will most likely impact Major League Soccer's schedule. San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan described the setting as looking like an "apocalyptic state" during practice last week. But it is not the look of the environment that makes it scary, it is the potential harm that it could have on players.
The National Women's Soccer League and the clubs agreed to postpone the Portland Thorn's home opener against OL Reign on Saturday, and again on Tuesday, when the City's air pollution levels were consistently in the "very unhealthy" on the scale set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), according to ESPN.
Four games that might be postponed in the coming days despite MLS not making an announcement yet.
The San Jose Earthquakes and Portland Timbers are scheduled to play two games in San Jose this week, one on Wednesday and a second one on Saturday. Fires surrounding San Jose are 91 and 97 percent contained, according to reports from fire.ca.gov.
Fires in near Los Angeles, where LA Galaxy is set to host the Colorado Rapids on Friday, are still raging. Only 44 percent of El Dorado Fire, which is to the east of Los Angeles, has been contained and 6 percent of the Bobcat Fire, located to the north of Los Angeles, has been contained.
The Seattle Sounders and LAFC game on Friday is also up in the air. The Washington area has been affected by the wildfires.
