The Egyptian forward was off the mark as his side kept it late to ran away with all the three points in their season opener.

Mohamed Salah successfully broke a Premier League record which previously belonged to Wayne Rooney after his goals guided Liverpool to a 4-3 victory over Leeds United on Saturday. The 28-year-old attacker earned the match ball by netting thrice, extending the Reds' record of winning every game he scores in to 35.

The test against Marcelo Bielsa's men was always going to be daunting but Liverpool made a firm statement by grabbing the game's opener in a little over 180 seconds after kickoff. It was Mohamed Salah who fired home from the spot after Robert Koch had handled his goal-bound effort.

Inside the 12th minute, Jack Harrison scored the leveller for the Whites before Virgil van Dijk sprang to head home Robertson's cross to hand Liverpool the lead again in the 20th minute. Patrick Bamford restored parity once more 10 minutes later but, two minutes later, Salah ensured that his side was in front ahead of half-time by scoring his second of the encounter.

The resilience of Leeds will be rewarded for the third time as Mateusz Klich set the game up for a nervy ending by tying the game at 3-3 in the 66th minute. With his side close to snatching their first point of the night, club record-signing Rodrigo fouled Fabinho in the penalty area to set Salah up with the opportunity to seal his hat-trick.

As things stand, Liverpool have now won every one of their last 35 Premier League matches in which the Egyptian attacker has scored. The outcome of Saturday's game meant that he has now surpassed Wayne Rooney's competition record for Manchester United of 34 successive wins when scoring. The former England international managed the feat between September 2008 and February 2011.

The Red Devils' legend is not the only one from the Old Trafford outfit that had a record being revised following Salah's feat. By scoring against Leeds, the former Chelsea and AS Roma star became only the second player in history after Teddy Sheringham to score in four consecutive opening Premier League weekends.

Relativel, Salah has now scored 50 goals in 63 home appearances in the Premier – only Newcastle legend Alan Shearer managed the feat more quickly. The Egyptian superstar is three goals away from matching Liverpool legend Kevin Keegan's record of scoring 100 goals in 323 games. The former will achieve the feat after making 154 appearances - 169 games less than his predecessor used in reaching the milestone.
