Lyon rue missed chances as Gnabry scores brace

Watch: Lyon rue missed chances as Gnabry joins elite list with first half brace

August 19, 2020 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The French outfit were made to trail in the first half after failing to take their chances early on.

Olympique Lyon were made to pay for their inefficiency in attack against Bayern Munich in Wednesday's UEFA Champions League semi-final clash. The Ligue 1 outfit failed to take a commanding position in the game after missing a series of goal scoring opportunities earlier in the encounter.

For the first 17 minutes of the proceeding, Lyon was the better team. The first big chance in the came fell to Memphis Depay in the sixth minute but the Dutch forward was unable to square Manuel Neuer for the night's first goal after breaking free from the center of the pitch. Moments later, the former Manchester United attacker came closer; this time, sending a ball across the face of goal which narrowly missed the head of Toko Ekambi.

In the 17th minute, the Cameroonian almost fired Lyon front but had a left-footed shot banging off the base of Bayern's goal post and right back at him. Needless to say, that was the last recognizable highlight for his side as Bayern pounced a brief moment later to game the game's complexion.

Following the immediate turnover in possession after Ekambi's missed opportunity, a brilliant breakaway was sealed by Serge Gnabry. The German international shrugged challenges from Lyon defenders after charging through from the right flank to create space and fire home a shot from close range.

In the 33rd minute, the former Arsenal starlet started and finished off the move for Bayern's second of the game. The winger gained possession and worked across the middle to feed Ivan Perisic on the left side of attack. The Croatian then sent in a low cross which was redirected at goal by Lewandowski but was kept out by Lyon goalkeeper Lopez. Gnabry subsequently popped up to tap home his second of the night.

Watch the goals below:

With 10 goals and one assist, Gnabry became the fourth player after Robert Lewandowski (19), Erling Haaland (11) and Kylian Mbappé (10) to have been directly involved in 10 ore more goals in the Champions League this season, along with. He is the second-highest scoring German in a single Champions League campaign after Mario Gomez. The former Bayern Munich star scored 12 goals in the 2011-2012 Champions League season.
