Setien's successor has been confirmed but the Dutchman might not be at the helm of Camp Nou for long.

Barcelona have made it official. Ronald Koeman is the new head coach at Camp Nou, with the Spanish giants confirming his appointment on Wednesday via social media.

This comes as little surprise. It has been known for a while that the Dutchman would succeed Quique Setien as gaffer. The former Barcelona player had been linked with the role prior to Setien's arrival but turned it down due to his obligations with the Netherlands national team. This time around, the Blaugrana icon wasted no time in leaving the Oranje when the Camp Nou came calling.

"FC Barcelona and Ronald Koeman have reached an agreement for the Dutchman to take over as first team coach until 30 June 2022," the club wrote.

In their statement, the Catalan giants highlighted the managerial experience and success achieved by the man who won them their first-ever European Cup. In his most recent job with the Dutch national team, Koeman inherited a fractured continental heavyweight and turned them into one of the most exciting squads in international football.

Barcelona fans will have a clue as to what his plans for the club are ahead of his official unveiling. President Josep Maria Bartomeu revealed that seven players (Lionel Messi, Ter Stegen, Antoine Griezmann, Clement Lenglet, Ousmane Dembélé, Nelson Semedo and Frenkie De Jong) are untouchable ahead of a planned squad overhaul and that Leo is crucial to Koeman's vision for the team. On top of that, the Dutch tactician's priority signing is said to be Ajax ace and fellow countryman Donny Van de Beek.

A rebuilding process is set to begin at Camp Nou in the wake of their embarrassing 8-2 Champions League loss to Bayern Munich, one that could span over the following few seasons. However, while Koeman will be the man to kick things off this summer, the newly-appointed coach may not even have more than one season.

This is because Victor Font, one of the leading candidates to win the March 2021 presidential election, has already promised to sack Ronald and replace him with Xavi should he take over the board. The iconic Spanish midfielder, who is currently the coach of Qatari side Al Sadd, is a crucial figure in Font's plan for the club and the presidential candidate will show no mercy to Koeman regardless of what he achieves in 2020/21.

"Even if Koeman has a great season, I will not change my plans," Victor said on Spanish radio program El Larguero.

"If I become president, Koeman will not be the coach of Barca in the 2021-22 season.

"Xavi understands that all the puzzles in the club must be put together. Who will lead the team will be decided by the Board of Directors, in our case it will be him [Xavi].

"Messi is completely disappointed because of the critical situation at the club both in sports, and in economic and organizational terms. I expect that Messi will play under Xavi in 2021."

What does this mean for the Catalan giants, given that the upcoming La Liga season is less than a month away? The current board should be aware of the conundrum facing Koeman, hence why he was offered a mere two-year deal rather than a three or four years. Despite resolving the issue of the Barcelona managerial vacancy, it appears the drama and political chaos going on at the Camp Nou will carry on for some time.
