Despite the UEFA Champions League and Europa League making a long-awaited return, Liga MX Clausura recorded the greatest number of viewers for soccer broadcasted in the United States from Monday, Aug. 3, through Monday, Aug. 10. The nine games, all of which started after 7:30 p.m. ET but one (Pumas UNAM 1-1 FC Juarez at 12:30 p.m. ET), averaged around 142,000 viewers and totaled 1,282,000 on Spanish-language TUDN and FOX Deportes.
The four quarter-final UEFA Champions League matches, two of which were transmitted through TUDN and the other two through Spanish-language Galavision, averaged 200,000 viewers and amassed a total of 802,000. The Barcelona-Napoli and Manchester City-Real Madrid games were broadcasted through TUDN and stockpiled 644,000 viewers while Bayern-Chelsea and Juventus-Lyon were transmitted through Galavision and garnered 158,000 viewers. The only Europa League game that made it to a daily top 150 cable originals and network finals over the one-week period was Sevilla-Roma, which aired through TUDN and gathered 86,000 viewers – more viewers than the Bayern-Chelsea and Juventus-Lyon games. The total viewers for European games broadcasted in the U.S. were 888,000.
The MLS is Back Tournament semifinal action amassed a total of 433,000 viewers over the two games aired on ESPN2 and Fox Sports1. Additionally, five TUDN segments made it to daily top 150 cable originals and network finals over the one-week period. Four of those segments were Futbol Central and one UEFA Champs en 60 accumulated 406,000 total viewers.
Barcelona's 3-1 win over Napoli on Saturday, Aug. 8, at 3 p.m. ET stole the show racking up 400,000 viewers on TUDN. This helped TUDN's viewership reach a total of 1,821,000 viewers and averaged 182,000 over ten games.
