Barca player tests positive for COVID-19

Barcelona confirm one player has tested positive for COVID-19

August 12, 2020 By Ali M.
The Blaugrana confirmed this in an official statement but this development has not put their UCL tie against Bayern Munich under jeopardy.

The return of football might have people believing that the coronavirus crisis is over but in reality, it’s quite the contrary. While clubs have been taking extreme precautionary measures to protect players, some have unfortunately contracted the virus, with Barcelona being the latest to confirm a positive case.

The Spanish giants released an official statement, revealing that one member has contracted COVID-19. While the identity of the player has understandably not been revealed, the club revealed that the man is fortunately asymptomatic.

The latest development has not put the Blaugrana’s upcoming tie, their Champions League quarter-final showdown with Bayern Munich, under threat. While the club did not reveal the identity of the player, the stated that he was one of nine players who were reported for the pre-season.

This means the man was not part of Setien’s squad for their European tie. The statement on Barcelona’s official website read:

"Following PCR tests conducted this Tuesday afternoon on the group of nine players due to begin the pre-season today, one of them has tested positive for Covid-19.

"The player has no symptoms, is in good health and has been quarantined at his home. The club has reported the matter to the relevant sporting and health authorities.

"All persons who have been in contact with the player have been tracked to perform the corresponding PCR tests.

"The player has not been in contact with any of the senior team players who are scheduled to travel to Lisbon this Thursday to compete in the Champions League."

This follows the confirmation from Atletico Madrid that two members of their squad contracted the coronavirus. Unlike in Barcelona’s case, the Rojiblancos players were a part of Simeone’s squad for their Champions League quarter-final tie against RB Leipzig.

Those two players were later revealed to be Angel Correa and Sime Vrsaljko. Both are self-isolating and while both will be forced to sit out the remainder of the 2019/20 Champions League season, they too are asymptomatic, which is great news.
