Preview: Atalanta vs PSG

Champions League debutants Atalanta come into this match having suffered their first defeat since January 20th. La Dea were beaten in their final Serie A match by Inter, 2-0, as they desperately hoped to try to pip the Nerazzurri to the runners-up spot in the league. Had they been able to beat Antonio Conte's side, it would have been their highest ever finish in Serie A, a monumental achievement for a smaller club that until then, had last lost a game when they were shocked to be on the wrong end of a 2-1 score-line against struggling side SPAL in January.

Still, despite ending the season with a loss, it didn't take away from the strong campaign Gian Piero Gasperini's side had and proved that the prior term, which saw them finish in third, was not a fluke as many had previously claimed. La Dea are also featuring in the Champions League for the first time in their history, and although they began proccedings quite poorly with three straight defeats to Croatian and Ukrainian outfits Dynamo Zagreb and Shakhtar Donetsk, followed by a 5-1 humiliation at the hands of Manchester City, they were able to turn things around in their final three matches, including picking up deserved victories over the two Eastern European sides in order to book their spot in the round of 16 as the runner-up team.

A strong performance in the first leg against Spanish side Valencia was enough to ensure that the Bergamo side had one foot firmly in the quarter-finals, and coupled with another high-scoring affair in Spain during which they again scored four goals, La Dea were able to seal their spot thanks to a 8-4 aggregate win.

Certainly, PSG will present a tough opponent, and it goes without saying that Atalanta are the underdogs. Les Parisiens have already won three trophies this season, including the Ligue 1 title in a truncated season due to COVID-19, and cruised through their group stage phase of this tournament without fuss. The only slight blemish on an otherwise stellar showing was a 2-2 stalemate against Real Madrid, but Thomas Tuchel's men nonetheless completed the group stage sans defeat. They had to battle hard against Dortmund following a loss in the first leg, but a vital away goal was enough to help keep them afloat, and coupled with a 2-0 home win, the French giants were able to book their spot into the quarter-finals.

Naturally, given their experience and strength of the squad, PSG are by far the team expected to head to the semi-finals. That being said, Atalanta did manage to score 98 goals in Serie A this season, making them the most prolific side in the league, and among the top-scoring teams in Europe's top five leagues. They may not have a superstar in their ranks like Kylian Mbappe or Neymar, but they had three players - Luis Muriel (18), Duvan Zapata (18), and Josip Ilicic (15) - who all ranked in the top ten in terms of goals scored in the league this season.

Defensively, they didn't do too badly, either, conceding 48 times, which is only five more than Scudetto winners Juventus, but in this tournament, they've only managed two clean sheets - during their victories over Dynamo Zagreb (2-0) and Shakhtar Donestsk (3-0). PSG, meanwhile, only failed to keep a clean sheet once during the group stages - during their two-all draw with Real Madrid - and were able to shut out Dortmund during their 2-0 win on home turf in their last Champions League tie before the competition went on pause due to COVID-19. All in all, PSG had the best defensive record out of any of the teams who completed the group stage with just two goals conceded, and will be looking to end their long wait to become European champions. Will they be able to clear the quarter-finals hurdle? Or will the plucky side from Bergamo spoil their plans?

Team news: Atalanta vs PSG

Atalanta: Unfortunately for the minnows, key player Josip Ilicic will miss this game due to a personal situation at home; the Slovenian left the camp several weeks ago to head back to his native country, according to reports. In addition, shot-stopper Pierluigi Gollini is out for a while as a result of a knee problem.

PSG: Meanwhile, experienced midfielder Angel Di Maria is suspended for this game, while Marco Verratti will miss out due to a calf injury. In what could be a huge blow for Tuchel, star striker Kylian Mbappe is a major doubt as a result of an ankle injury sustained during the team's Coupe de France final match and will have to be evaluated prior to the match. Edinson Cavani is no longer with the team following his transfer to Benfica earlier this summer.
