Juve name Andrea Pirlo as new boss

Juve shock the world of football by naming Andrea Pirlo as new boss

August 8, 2020 By Oscar Rojas
Just hours after sacking Maurizio Sarri, the bianconeri have appointed their former midfielder as new first-team coach.

Juventus wasted no time in deciding who was going to replace Maurizio Sarri, and hours after the sacking of the former Napoli boss, the bianconeri appointed club legend Andrea Pirlo as their new tactician.

The former midfielder had been named Juve's U-23 coach last week, but in what turned out to be a shocking move, president Andrea Agnelli handed him the first-team job. Pirlo was chosen over other more experienced options such as Mauricio Pochettino and Massimiliano Allegri.

Pirlo won seven titles for Juventus in one of the most successful eras for the team. With Arturo Vidal and Claudio Marchisio as his sidekicks, "L'Architetto" led the bianconeri to four Serie A titles, two Supercoppa titles, and one Coppa Italia win. Pirlo was also a member of the team that lost the 2014-15 UEFA Champions League final against Barcelona. He retired from football after the end of the 2017 MLS season.

Juve's move to name Pirlo as their boss comes as quite shocking, since the former midfielder has not been able to try his coaching abilities anywhere. Nevertheless, the intelligence he showed during his playing years might come in handy when it comes to calling the shots on the sidelines.

Here's what the bianconeri had to say about Pirlo's unveiling in a brief press release.

"Today's choice is based on the belief that Pirlo has what it takes to lead from his debut on the bench, an expert and talented squad to pursue new successes," the document states.

According to Juventus' website, Pirlo has signed a two-year deal as coach, which will expire by the end of the 2021-22 season if things go as planned.
