Philadelphia Union vs Portland Timbers: FiveThirtyEight Projections
On Feb. 28, 2008, the MLS announced that Philadelphia would be the home of the sixteenth franchise. The Philadelphia Union joined the league in 2010 and has yet to lift a cup since.
The U has been close to glory on three separate occasions with runners-up Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup finishes in 2014, 2015 and 2018. In terms of MLS Cup Playoffs, Philadelphia’s best finishes were in the Eastern Conference semifinal twice, in 2011 and 2019.
Nevertheless, it might be time for the Philadelphia Union to finally take silverware back to Philly. The U enter the MLS is Back Tournament semifinals as favorites with a 31% chance win it all according to FiveThirtyEight projections.
On the other hand, the Portland Timbers are the only remaining side that has brought glory back to their city, having won the MLS Cup in 2015. However, FiveThirtyEight projections have Giovanni Savarese’s side as the least likely to win the tournament in Orlando with a 21% chance.

Orlando City SC vs Minnesota United: FiveThirtyEight Projections
Orlando City is living their best run of form since their inception into the MLS in 2015. New head coach Oscar Pareja has brought out the best of his players, making him a fan favorite after just six games. Looking back at their history, the Lions have never qualified for an MLS Cup playoff and have only reached the U.S. Open Cup semifinal once in 2019.
However, Orlando topped Group A and went on to knock the Montreal Impact and favorites to win it all Los Angeles FC out of the tournament. Despite a good run in the tournament so far, FiveThirtyEight has Orlando City tied with the Timbers at a 21% chance to claim the MLS is Back cup on home ground.
Last but not least is Minnesota United, which, according to FiveThirtyEight projections, are second favorites to win-out the tournament with a 27% chance.
Like Philadelphia and Orlando, Minnesota has not won a trophy since joining Major League Soccer. To be fair, this is only the Loons’ fourth year in the league, and they are coming off a successful 2019 season that saw them reach the MLS Cup playoffs and finish as runner-up in the U.S. Open Cup.
