Ten-man FC Porto beats Benfica in cup final

Ten-man FC Porto stun Benfica to win Taça de Portugal title

It's a double for the Portuguese Primiera champions!

FC Porto have completed the domestic double after beating Benfica to win the Portuguese Cup Trophy. The reigning champions of the Portuguese Primeira Liga fought hard to secure a 2-1 victory despite having a man sent off in Saturday's super clash.

In a game which marked the end of Nelson Verissimo's tenure as the head coach of Benfica, many would have expected the Eagles to secure a parting gift for the 43-year-old with Jorge Jesus' reign beckoning. However, the first half of the encounter was characterized by the Lisbon outfit and their nemesis' struggle to create meaningful goalscoring opportunities in the final third.

It was not a one-off as far as physicality in meetings between the two sides goes. At the end of the first 45 minutes, a total of 18 fouls had been registered with only eight shots attempted. One such infringement resulted in the sending off of FC Porto's Luis Díaz, a development that barely affected the game's outcome in the end.

After the break, the first 15 minutes that followed altered the dynamics of the cup tie with Porto taking an unlikely lead from two set-pieces. Firstly, Chancel Mbemba capitalized on Benfica's Vlachodimos parrying out a free-kick to head home the game's first in the 47th-minute.

Nine minutes later, the DR Congo international connected with the ball from close range for his second of the night following another poorly defended set-piece by Benfica. It was only the second time in the defender's career that he had scored twice in a game.

With less than six minutes to play, Carlos Vinicius converted from the spot to take the scoreline to 2-1 after Nelson Verissimo's men were awarded a penalty. Nonetheless, a comeback could not be completed as Porto extended their winning run over their rivals to win in succession in all competitions. Relatively, Benfica have now lost 11 Taca de Portugal trophies in their history.
