Man Utd: Greenwood makes history in West Ham draw

Premier League: Greenwood makes history as West Ham dash Manchester United's hopes of securing a top-four finish

July 22, 2020 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The youngster secured an impressive milestone as with his side being held to a 1-1 draw in Wednesday's outing.

Manchester United's fate for next season still remains in their hands after the Red Devils dropped two vital points in their penultimate Premier League clash with West Ham. In an encounter which saw Mason Greenwood grab a new record, the Red Devils were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford ahead of their final day encounter with Leicester City.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men entered the half-time break with a goal deficit to deal with after Michal Antonio had converted a spot-kick conceded by Paul Pogba. A great restart by United was duly rewarded with Mason Greenwood smashing home from close-range to restore parity.

In effect the academy graduate - with his 17th goal of the season - matched the most-prolific teenager record of the club jointly held by George Best, Brian Kidd and Wayne Rooney.

With his tally in the Premier League this season rising to 10, Greenwood became the first teenager to manage that goal haul for Manchester United in the competition. He also became the first teenager to do so in the entirety of the league since the 2012-13 season where Romelu Lukaku scored 14 times.

While the youngster will relish the milestones he secured, his side now faces a tough test to keep their Champions League hopes alive. The draw with West Ham means that Manchester United must at least draw with Leicester in their last game to seal a place in the top-four for next season.

Meanwhile should Chelsea fail against both Liverpool and Wolves, qualification to play in Europe's elite league will be guaranteed for the Old Trafford outfit.
