Jurgen Klopp suffers first Arsenal defeat as Liverpool's pursuit of Man City's points record ends

July 15, 2020 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The German manager and his men were condemned to their third defeat of the season in the mid-week's trip to the Emirates.

For the first time in his managerial career, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has lost a Premier League game to Arsenal. The German coach saw his side's pursuit of breaking Manchester City's points record coming an end following Wednesday night's 2-1 defeat.

After a rather excellent start which resulted in Sadio Mane scoring the opener, the Reds got punished twice for being sloppy. The first incident featured skipper of the night Virgil van Dijk who was forced to concede possession around his penalty area to allow Lacazette to score the equalizer. Moments later, goalkeeper Allison Becker committed another error to give Reiss Nelson to score what will be eventual winner.

In hindsight, Liverpool failed to top up their current 93 points haul after 36 games. As a result, the Reds will be unable to beat Manchester City's 100 points milestone even if they win their remaining games against Chelsea and Newcastle United.

For Arsenal, the dream of securing European football is still alive and a top-six finish might be inevitable for the Gunners should they win their remaining games while hoping that other results go in their favor.
