MLS MVP reportedly skipping MLS is Back tournament in Orlando

Mexican star Carlos Vela will not be among the players that will participate in the newly-created competition.

Plans to have the best of the best in the MLS playing a tournament in Orlando seem to have gone out of the window, as the league's MVP has reportedly determined to skip the competition planned by the league.

Mexican striker and league MVP Carlos Vela has decided to postpone his return to the pitch due to coronavirus fears. The former Arsenal and Real Sociedad star has decided that family comes first, and due to the rising coronavirus cases in Florida, he will not bring the disease to his household.

According to a report by the Los Angeles Times, Vela has decided not to play the MLS is Back tournament for personal reasons, which include his wife being pregnant and the presence of his three-year-old son.

Vela was the top scorer in the league during his maiden season, and led the LAFC to the Western Conference semi-finals in his first year with the club.

Vela has joined a host of players that will also skip their respective tournaments. Megan Rapinoe, David Price, Ryan Zimmerman and Avery Bradley are some of the footballers that have chosen not to play the competition. Furthermore, basketball players Trevor Ariza and DeAndre Jordan have opted out of the competition the NBA has planned to put the season to its end.
