Greenwood matches Wayne Rooney's PL record as Bruno Fernandes grabs brace in Brighton win

June 30, 2020 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The pair run the show as the Red Devils secured another vital victory in their quest for a top-four finish.

Manchester United starlet Mason Greenwood, and winter signing Bruno Fernandes, delivered remarkable performances in Tuesday's clash with Brighton to secure all three points for their side. The pair contributed the three goals in the night's victory which took the Red Devils within two points of a top-four place.

It was business as usual from the onset for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men who opened the scoring in the 16th minute, thanks to young Mason Greenwood. The 18-year-old forward fired a low shot into the bottom right corner after displacing the Brighton defender he faced with a number of quick step-overs.

In effect, the academy sensation took his tally in the Premier League to six, becoming the first player aged 18 to manage that amount of goals in a single season since Wayne Rooney in 2003/04. Also, the England under-19 star became the first Manchester United player to score six goals in the league in a single campaign before turning 19. So far, he has scored twice as many Premier League goals this season as any other teenager in the competition.

After the Greenwood show came Bruno Fernandes'. The Portuguese star who had an attempt hitting the post earlier finally benefited from a Pogba assist to score Manchester United's second of the night in the 29th minute.

The former Sporting skipper's sealed his Man of the Match-worthy performance with a stunning volley in the 50th minute. A quick counter-attacking move resulted in Mason Greenwood locating the attacking midfielder with a fine cross which he simply smashed home. So far, the Portuguese has been involved in 10 goals in 13 games since signing for Manchester United in January.
