The Magpies will welcome Manchester City to St James' Park with the pair set to battle for the last FA Cup semi-final slot.

Match preview

Manchester City will hope to take their FA Cup title defense a notch higher when they travel to take on Newcastle United at the St James' Park on Sunday. The Citizens approach the tie as former champions of the Premier League with Chelsea's win on Thursday handing Liverpool the title.

Needless to say, their impressive run in the cup competition could remain without blemish should they get the better of the Magpies in the quarter-final encounter. The run in the campaign remains unmatched considering that they could take the number of successive wins to 10 against Steve Bruce's men.

In a broader perspective, Manchester City had been beaten just once in eight appearances before the latest 2-1 defeat to Chelsea. Their form after the season was restored has also proved to be solid as the Etihad outfit has managed two wins out of three. With the EFL Trophy already in the bag, Pep Guardiola's men fancy their chances of making another concrete step towards securing the second domestic cup in England by condemning Newcastle to defeat.

But that task will not be completed without a tussle considering how much of a force the Magpies have been at the St James' Park in recent times. So far, they remain unbeaten at home in seven games - a run that dates back to New Year's Day. They come into the cup tie without putting a foot wrong in their last five fixtures, winning three and drawing the remaining two matches. The Tyneside club has also kept three clean-sheets in the course of those outings.

As precedence serves, Newcastle might fancy the idea of causing an upset to lead Man City to their third successive away defeat in all competitions since October 2016. So far, they have won the last two FA Cup clashes between them and the Citizens.

Team news

Newcastle will be without Nabil Bentaleb as he serves a one-match ban after accumulating two yellow cards in the FA Cup. The availability of Matty and Sean Longstaff, as well as skipper Isaac Hayden and Matt Ritchie, remains unknown as they are yet to recover from respective injuries.

For Manchester City, Fernandinho is banned after receiving a straight red card in the mid-week's Premier League defeat to Chelsea. Sergio Aguero is out of contention after picking up a hamstring injury in the win over Burnley.

John Stones and Claudio Bravo are also yet to return from the treatment table whereas Phil Foden, Eric Garcia, and Joao Cancelo face late fitness tests.

Potential starting XI

Newcastle: Darlow; Yedlin, Schar, Lascelles, Fernandez, Rose; Almiron, Hayden, Shelvey, Saint-Maximin; Carroll.

Manchester City: Ederson; Cancelo, Otamendi, Garcia, Zinchenko; De Bruyne, Rodri, D Silva; Bernardo, Jesus, Sane.
