Preview: Fortuna vs Dortmund

Relegation-threatened Fortuna Dusseldorf will have a tough task on their hands when Borussia Dortmund come to town on Saturday. Die Flingeraner find themselves in 16th spot coming into this match, three points from safety and another three away from the relegation zone. In short, they are in a precarious position. If they can improve their run of form, they may be able to lift themselves out of the unwanted play-off berth they find themselves in, but if they can't turn things around, they will definitely slide into the dreaded drop zone.

Unfortunately for them, they will be welcoming a Dortmund side who have lost just one of their last nine Bundesliga games. Die Schwarzgelben have been in solid form, with their only slip-up being a disappointing 1-0 loss in Der Klassiker. That defeat effectively has cost Lucien Favre's men the league title, as Bayern have shown no sign of slowing down any time soon. Seven points behind the Bavarian titans, the objective now for Dortmund at this point is to ensure that they maintain their firm grip on second spot ahead of the likes of RB Leipzig, Borussia Moenchengladbach, and Bayer Leverkusen, all of whom are battling to also earn a place in next season's Champions League tournament.

Although Fortuna have earned seven draws from their 11 matches since appointing Uwe Rösler as coach on January 29, they have not been able to earn a single point in their last eight games against any of the teams ranked in the top five. Furthermore, Fortuna were beaten 5-0 by Dortmund in the reverse fixture earlier this season.

Curiously, though, the struggling side do have historically strong home record against Dortmund. Out of their 20 past fixtures, Fortuna have won nine (while losing five and drawing six). And notably, they did win this exact game 2-1 last season. But it's important to keep in mind that last year, they had the backing of over 30,000 fans cheering them on. This time around, due to COVID-19, they will have to face die Schwarzgelben in a literally empty stadium, and the lack of fan support could certainly play a huge factor on the players' morale.

Match facts: Fortuna vs Dortmund

Team news: Fortuna vs Dortmund

Fortuna: The hosts will have to make do without Adam Bodzek due to suspension, while skipper Oliver Fink misses out as a result of a calf injury. Meanwhile, USMNT international goalkeeper Zack Steffen remains a long-term absentee after suffering a bad knee injury earlier this season. In addition, other players who won't be available include Aymen Barkok (knock), Tim Wiesner (ankle) and record signing Dawid Kownacki, who is still completing his rehab process following a knee injury.

Borussia Dortmund: Although he has returned to light training, this game comes too soon for injury-prone Marco Reus, and given that he's still recovering from a groin injury, he's not likely to feature at all. However, Norwegian starlet Erling Haaland has also returned to training and could make the bench. Nico Schulz is struggling with muscular problems, so is likely to be rested. Both Dan-Axel Zagadou and Mahmoud Dahoud are definitely out for the rest of the season due to knee injuries.
