EPL: No new positive coronavirus result from tests

Premier League: No new positive coronavirus result recorded from 1,130 tests ahead of league return

May 30, 2020 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
Results of COVID-19 tests performed on players and staff returned with none being positive.

The Premier League has confirmed that there have been no new positive coronavirus cases after the fourth round of testing. In a statement issued on Saturday, it was revealed that the results of the 1130 tests performed on football players and staff came out negative.

The league, which was suspended in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is on schedule to resume on June 17. However, skepticism emerged in recent weeks after the three previous rounds of testing produced a total of 12 positive results.

Watford's Adrian Marriapa alongside three other Hornets stars were among the affected, as well as Burnley assistant manager Ian Woan, and Bournemouth goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. This week, reports from the UK media revealed that Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers had also tested positive for the virus but had completely recovered.

Still, there was the need for another round of testing to be conducted as outlined in the guidelines aiding the restoration of the Premier League. The statement issued by the Premier League read as follows: "The Premier League can today confirm that on Thursday 28 May and Friday 29 May, 1130 players and club staff were tested for Covid-19. Of these, zero have tested positive.

"The Premier League is providing this aggregated information for the purposes of competition integrity and transparency. No specific details as to clubs or individuals will be provided by the League and results will be made public after each round of testing."

The Premier League resumes of June 17, beginning with the outstanding matches between Manchester City and Arsenal as well as Aston Villa and Sheffield United.
