Leipzig come into this game on a high note after pummeling Mainz in a 5-0 victory. It was a good result for die Bullen, who had recorded three frustrating draws in their last few fixtures, dropping six valuable points along the way as they aim to secure a top four spot. In addition, Timo Werner finally ended his eight-match goal-scoring drought in excellent fashion as he netted a hat-trick, which now puts him just three goals behind Bayern's ace Robert Lewandowski in the race for the coveted Torjägerkanone at the end of the season.
Notably, Werner's return to form coincided with Julian Naglesmann opting to bench Roma loanee Patrik Schick. Many have observed that Werner being played out of position to accommodate Schick has affected the German international's goal output. Given that Leipzig did pay the Giallorossi to bring him in on loan (with an option to buy him permanently), it will be very interesting to see how Naglesmann figures out a new way to use him effectively in the team - without hampering Werner's contributions.
Leipzig's win, coupled with Gladbach's loss to Leverkusen have shaken things up in the table. Die Bullen now have risen up the ranks into third spot, but they also have Leverkusen breathing down their necks, so Naglesmann will naturally know that there is really no room for slip-ups at this juncture.
Although they will be the clear underdogs in this fixture, the visitors, who sit in 11th place, will have a bit of wind in their sails. Hertha Berlin have been in excellent form since the Bundesliga restarted. They have not only picked up two wins, but have done so sans conceding a goal. Moreover, these were not the type of wins in which they scored just one goal and frantically parked the bus. Both games saw them score at least three times, showing comfort in pouring numbers forward, but still being assured at the back. Their most recent result was a 4-0 drubbing of city rivals Union Berlin in last Friday's Berlin derby, and certainly Bruno Labbadia's side will be feeling a bit of confidence ahead of this game.
Leipzig: Ethan Ampadu (Back trouble), Yussuf Polusen (Ankle Injury), Ibrahmia Konate (Hamstring injury), and Konrad Laimer (Knee injury) are all absentees for the hosts. Konate and Poulsen being out leaves Julian Naglesmann two men short at the back, but he will certainly find a way to manage the resources he has to put together a solid starting XI ahead of this tie.
Hertha Berlin: The visitors will be missing Thomas Kraft, Santiago Ascacibar, Karim Rekik, and Niklas Stark due to varying injuries. Finally, Salomon Kalou has been suspended, but not because of too many yellow cards or picking up a red. No, rather he simply opted to be foolish enough to film himself not sticking to COVID-19 rules and, yes of course, share it, so the club have decided to leave him out of the squad for now.
