Bayern, Muller make history in 5-2 Frankfurt win

Bayern Munich, Muller make Bundesliga history in 5-2 Frankfurt rout

May 23, 2020 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
A dominant performance by the Bavarians has landed them yet another milestone.

Bayern Munich has landed another Bundesliga record following Saturday's emphatic win over Eintracht Frankfurt. The Bavarians scored five times and conceded twice to consolidate their top spot ahead of the mid-week DerKlassiker with Borussia Dortmund.

Bayern was ushered in control from the onset, with Leon Goretzka grabbing the game's opener inside the 17th minute. The midfielder was in the right place at the right time to tap home a pass across from Thomas Muller. In effect, the latter, whose assist tally now stands at 17, equaled the Bundesliga record previously set by Kevin De Bruyne for Wolfsburg in the 2014-2015 campaign.

In the 41st minute, Muller doubled Bayern's lead heading into half-time. Forty-five seconds after the restart, Lewandowski scored his 27th league goal and 42nd of the season with a towering header. The Polish striker is one goal away from equalling the tally in his highest-scoring campaign for the Munich outfit.

But a brief moment of scare graced the doorstep of Hansi Flick's side with Frankfurt pulling two goals back in a space of three minutes from successive corner kicks. Martin Hinteregger was the scorer of the goals while former Bayern Munich midfielder Sebastian Rode assisted both strikes.

Nevertheless, the dream of a dramatic comeback could not materialize as Alphonso Davies restored the two-goal advantage in the 61st minute. Martin Hinteregger put the final nail in the coffin by securing a hat-trick with a 74th-minute own-goal.

Essentially, Bayern Munich set a new Bundesliga record by becoming the first club in the competition's history to score 80 goals after 27 matchdays. Last weekend's 2-0 win over Union Berlin saw the Bavarian's take their goal tally in 16 Bundesliga games under Hansi Flick to 50 - the best return of any head coach in league history.
