The tool used by the referees may not be around for the final stages of the competition when it resumes this year.

VAR technology keeps adding controversy to the beautiful game, but the UEFA Champions League will not be part of that discussion when the season starts again.

According to a report by RMC Sport, UEFA execs led by Alexander Ceferin are considering to drop VAR technology from the competition, although it would only be a temporary move.

The report by the French media outlet suggests that UEFA's bosses have legitimate health concerns about the referees who are locked into the VAR booth. With the coronavirus pandemic still being a thing, social distancing would not be possible inside the booth, which would force the European organization to drop VAR for the rest of the 2019-20 season.

One more option to keep using VAR technology would be to add a panel between each member of the VAR booth refs, but the idea is to keep all safety measures suggested by the World Health Organization. Hence, the rest of the UEFA Champions League campaign will not only be played behind closed doors, but also with no technology around to help the referees.
