Serie A chief says EPL will cancel 2019/20 season

Udinese director claims Premier League will soon announce decision to cancel 2019/20 season

April 8, 2020 By Ali M.
According to this Serie A chief, the English top-flight will reveal this decision very soon.

The fate of the Premier League season is up in the air but according to a Serie A chief, the English top-flight have decided to cancel the 2019/20 campaign and will soon announce this decision in a public statement.

That man is Pierpaolo Marino, a director at Italian top-flight side Udinese. He states that the coronavirus situation in England is "very, very serious" and has forced the Premier League to follow in the footsteps of the Belgian top-flight in ending the season prematurely.

"The Belgian Federation has already sanctioned the end of their league, despite the threats of sanctions from UEFA," Marino told Sportitalia (as per the Daily Mail).

"In England, the Premier League is about to release a similar statement, because the situation there is becoming very, very serious. I frankly just hope we can enjoy football again after the coronavirus.

"It doesn't matter how long it takes, we need to get out of this danger zone. I am worried for the next seasons, not the old one."

Does Marino's words carry any weight? What does a director at Udinese know about the inner dealings and discussions taking place in the Premier League? On this point, it should noted that Udinese have strong connections with English top-flight side Watford as both clubs share the same owner. This means that Marino could have gained insider's info.

Nonetheless, until confirmed by the Premier League, their course of action is to resume the season at a later and safer date. Strides have been taken to help the campaign return, including lifting the 3pm blackout.

However, if the season was to be canceled, all fingers point to Liverpool being crowned the champions given their 25-point lead at the top. Man City, Leicester, and Chelsea occupy the remaining Champions League spots while Bournemouth, Aston Villa, and Norwich sit in the bottom three. It remains unclear what the fate of the relegation battle would be.
