Barcelona players have reportedly refused an offer by the club's board to take a pay cut to lighten the financial damage on their wage structure as a result of the coronavirus crisis. The revelation made by Spanish publication Marca comes a week after it was established that the 'senior players' would consider slashing their salaries since the income the club gets will not be enough to pay them.
With football suspended, clubs have taken serious financial hits with their stream of revenue from in-house stores, club museums and stadiums put on hold. Barcelona has not been spared in the global crisis and the Spanish club is actively putting measures in place to ensure its survival in the foreseeable future.
Following a meeting between the Blaugrana board members earlier this week, directors were informed about the losses the club was set to incur. There, it was decided that one way for funds to be sustained by the club will be to ask its players for a pay-cut. As a result the club's president Josep María Bartomeu met with the senior players where the necessity for players to lower their salaries was established.
However, a report by Marca on Tuesday has revealed that an initial offer submitted by Barca to its players has been refuted as it was not satisfactory enough. With agreement pending, the two parties have given themselves some time to speak to their respective financial advisors for a potential compromise to be made.
