Chelsea FCW signs German midfielder Melanie Leupolz

March 23, 2020 By Juan Aguerrevere
The world of football is up in flames as the Coronavirus pandemic spreads across the planet. Meanwhile, Chelsea has kept busy signing a world-class German midfielder in Melanie Leupolz to buff up its already stacked squad.

Chelsea FCW was on its way to making a historic FA Women's Super League run before COVID-19 entered the picture.

Emma Hayes' Blues accumulated 39 points in 15 games, winning 12 and drawing three. With seven games left in the season – a possible 21 points – the West London club could've potentially finished as incincibles and surpassed Arsenal's 54-point finish in the 2018-19 season.

Also, Chelsea won the FA WSL Cup in February and was scheduled to Everton in the FA Women's Cup quarter-final, meaning that the club was in it for a domestic treble. But this incredible season could be tossed to the garbage depending on what measure the league FA takes.

Anyhow, Chelsea seems to be looking forward instead of lamenting the past signing Bayern Munich captain and German international Melanie Leupolz.

The 25-year-old midfielder agreed to pre-contract terms on a three-year deal from this summer until the summer of 2023. Hayes will have Leupolz at her disposal ahead of the 2020/2021 campaign.

The midfielder won two league titles with captained Bayern Munich and captained the side for two seasons in her six years at the club. Leupolz also has vast experience with the German national team representing her nation in four major tournaments since her debut in 2013. She won gold medals at the 2013 UEFA Women's European Championship and the Olympic Games in 2016.

"Melanie has the right qualities that we look for in players at Chelsea. She's got international experience, being the captain of Bayern Munich and her best years are yet to come," Hayes said.
