Uncertainty over how long the Coronavirus pandemic will last forced Concacaf to suspend competitions including its 2020 Women’s Under-17 Championships.

The bi-annual tournament was supposed to take place in Toluca, Mexico from May 1 to May 10.  Furthermore, the 2020 Concacaf Futsal Championships was the other competition hit by a suspension.

"Following further consultation with key stakeholders, we have made the decision to suspend two additional Concacaf national team tournaments."

The start of the seventh edition of the tournament will be prolonged until further notice according to Concacaf's statement.

"Both competitions require significant international travel for a number of our Member Associations and their teams, and we have made this decision with their welfare in mind."

The final tournament was initially scheduled to begin on May 1 and end on May 10. However, Concacaf determined that suspending it was the best decision after monitoring the public health situation further.

The final tournament was debuting its new format that includes 20 teams instead of the original eight. The top three teams would have sealed their ticket to the 2020 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in India.

So far, All India Football Federation has not given in to the pandemic and will continue its domestic league, the Hero I-League, behind closed doors as advised by India's Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. The World Cup remains scheduled from November 2 through November 21.

As of March 19, there have been 194 reported cases in India and four deaths. But these figures are most likely misleading given the lack of testing in the nation. Anyhow, without qualifiers, there will not be a tournament.

A total of 13 nations still need to qualify for the tournament – three CAF, three Concacaf, three Conmebol, three UEFA and one OFC. Only hosts India, Japan and North Korea have qualified for the competition.
