We say goodbye to Copa America 2020 and hello to Copa America 2021.

Shortly after UEFA suspended Euro 2020, postponing the competition until 2021, CONMEBOL announced that they would be doing exactly that with their Copa America competition.

The South American tournament was set to take place this summer in Argentina and Colombia; however, the vastly-spreading coronavirus pandemic has changed the landscape of football. Many domestic leagues have been suspended due to COVID-19, including all of Europe's top-six leagues, making it all but impossible to stage Copa America this summer.

Clubs will need time in summer to wrap up the season, with the 2019/20 campaign on hold all across the world. This would immensely affect Copa America given that several of the continent's star players – Messi, Neymar, Aguero, Cavani, James, Alexis, etc. – play in Europe and will be required to see off both the domestic and European leagues.

CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez revealed the new dates for the competition, announcing that they would be stage from June 11 to July 11 of 2021. He also explained their reasoning for reaching this decision.

"This is an extraordinary measure for an unexpected situation and responds to the fundamental need to avoid the exponential evolution of the virus," Dominguez said, as per SuperSport.

"It wasn't easy to take this decision but we must safeguard at all times the health of our players and all those who form part of the big South American football family. Have no doubts that the oldest international tournament in the world will be back stronger than ever in 2021."

Twelve teams were gearing up for this summer's competition but plans have now changed. Of the 12, 10 are South Americans while two countries – Australia and Qatar – were invited. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, this postponement will force the Socceroos to pull out of the competition.
