EPL legend says Liverpool shouldn't be given title

Premier League legend says Liverpool should not win the title if the season is canceled

March 16, 2020 By Ali M.
Due to coronavirus, the English top-flight season might not be completed.

Due to vastly-spreading coronavirus and its effects in Europe, football in the top leagues have ceased, including the English top-flight. Many speculate that the season is unlikely to resume in the near future, meaning it will be canceled.

This leaves us with a question: who will awarded the 2019/20 title? Liverpool are the leaders and were well on their way to the crown prior to the suspension. However, according to one iconic player, the Reds should not be crowned champions

That man is Alan Shearer. The legendary striker argues that if the season is called off prematurely, then the campaign should be declared null and void without winners or losers.

"If, and it is a huge if, the season cannot be completed then there is no way you can have a winner or loser," the former Newcastle star wrote in The Sun

"As harsh and as horrible as that would be for some clubs, none more so than Liverpool, it is the only outcome.

"If you cannot complete the fixtures then you cannot go handing out titles or consider relegating anybody.

"For Liverpool, it would be incredibly harsh. But I cannot see how it would be fair to hand them the title - despite the fact it is obvious nobody is going to catch them.

"They only need six points to wrap it up but they haven’t got them yet so for that reason it has to be declared null and void.

"It would be very different if the season was suspended after they had got the points to win it. But they haven’t and however horrible a scenario it would be, it’s the only option."

It appears unlikely that this will be the outcome given that Klopp’s side need only two more wins to be crowned champions. However, should the season be declared null and void, Liverpool can feel hardly done.

The Daily Mail recently reported that a crisis meeting will be held on Thursday to decide the fate of the remainder of the season. While some teams are keen on completing the season at a later date, the FA chairman has reportedly told Premier League chief executive Richard Masters that the odds don’t favor this occurring.
