PSG ends Champions League curse to seal quarter-final qualification

March 11, 2020 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Ligue 1 club defeated Borussia Dortmund at home to progress to the next stage of the competition.

Paris Saint-Germain has ended its UEFA Champions League Round of 16 jinx by qualifying to the quarter-finals of the competition for the first time in four year. Les Parisians secured a 2-0 home win to end the tie with Borussia Dortmund with a 3-2 aggregate scoreline.

The hosts began Wednesday night's encounter with a 2-1 deficit from the first leg in Germany but ushered themselves in control in the very early stage of the match. Neymar Jr, who scored the Parisians' only goal at the Signal Iduna Park, once again got on the scoresheet to hand his side the lead in the 28th minute. Juan Bernat then doubled the advantage with an assist from Pablo Sarabia.

With very little left for Dortmund to do, the Bundesliga outfit saw any chance of forcing the game into extra-time thrown out the window with Emre Can picking up a red card for a foul on Neymar in the 89th minute. The final result eventually saw PSG progressing to the quarter-finals for the first time since 2016.

In the previous three editions of the competition, the Parc des Princes outfit has crashed out at the last 16 stage after being dealt defeats by Manchester United in 2018/2019, Real Madrid in 2017/2018 and Barcelona in 2016/2017 respectively.

Wednesday night's home win over Borussia Dortmund also saw PSG progress to the next stage in a Champions League campaign after losing the first leg of a knockout match.
