The coronavirus outbreak has turned the world of football upside down, and Italian football games are set to be halted until April 3 due to a request made by the Italian Olympic Committee to Serie A execs.
The entity also known as CONI issued a press release informing their decision to suspend all sports activities in the country due to the epidemic, which has already caused over 366 deaths in the country, as per reports.
"Every action and circumstance leads to the same point: the top priority for us is to protect everyone's health, which is why we have considered suspending all sporting events due to medical reasons," the document states.
Italy is one of the countries with the highest dead tolls in the world due to this disease, with 463 confirmed deaths. The Northern side of the country has been quarantined by the government, in what is seen as a major health problem in most regions of the world.
The Italian Olympic Committee has already stated that Serie A clubs involved in European competitions can still play their games, since they have no jurisdiction over those matches. Nevertheless, proper measures should be taken to prevent the spread of the disease. This week, Atalanta will play their UEFA Champions League game against Valencia behind closed doors, and next week, Napoli and Juventus will play the second leg matches of their respective ties, with the bianconeri set to host Lyon.
The last Serie A game to be played as of now is the clash between Sassuolo and Brescia, since the decision to suspend all sports events in the country came just minutes before the match.
