It's now down to the final eight, and there are still a few small teams hoping to make their mark as Bayern Munich gear up to book their spot in the semi-finals.

And then there were eight. It's now down to the last eight of the DFB-Pokal, and while Bayern Munich are the natural favorites to win it, there are seven other sides hoping to block the Bavarian titans from making it a 20th title this spring.

Here's a look at who's left in this competition ahead of the first batch of games starting on March 3rd.

Saarbrücken

Number of DFB-Pokal-titles: 0

Current rank in Bundesliga: N/A

Saarbrücken are truly the minnows out of the eight teams remaining in this competition. Unlike everyone else, they've been playing in this tournament since August 11, when the first round kicked off. That's because they feature in the Regionalliga Südwest, which is in the fourth tier. So if they can pull off an upset against their next opponents, they will be into the final four. Which in itself, will feel like having won the Pokal for this small regional club.

Fortuna Düsseldorf

Number of DFB-Pokal titles: 2 (in 1979 and 1980)

Current rank in Bundesliga: 16

Currently floundering in the Bundesliga - they sit in 16th spot - Fortuna Dusseldorf will know that the Pokal represents their only realistic chance at any sort of silverware this season. But they will be taking on a very hungry and determined Saarbrücken side who have gotten all the way to the quarter-finals despite featuring in the fourth tier and will certainly relish their chances at taking down a team who plays their football in the Bundesliga.

Schalke

Number of DFB-Pokal-titles: 5 (1937, 1972, 2001, 2002, 2011)

Current rank in Bundesliga: 6

Schalke have had their ups and downs this term, but are right now on a bad patch of form. Winless in their last five Bundesliga games, with losses in two of them, they certainly won't be too enthused at the prospect of facing Bayern midweek. However, the Bavarians have been struck by a huge injury blow which could give the hosts some respite and a glimmer of hope at reaching the semi-finals.

Bayer Leverkusen

Number of DFB-Pokal-titles: 1 (in 1993)

Current rank in Bundesliga: 5

With a young, vibrant squad, this possibly could be Leverkusen's year to finally get their hands on some silverware. They haven't won this title in over 27 years, but Frankfurt had gone 30 years sans a win before beating Bayern in the final two years ago, so really, anything is possible especially in these kind of cup ties.

Union Berlin

Number of DFB-Pokal-titles: 0

Current rank in Bundesliga: 10

Union Berlin find themselves in mid-table. Not in danger of relegation, but not really making much progress towards the European spots. Still, they've quietly made their way to the quarter-finals in this competition, and only two matches stand between their way and the final. A victory in the final earns the winner an automatic European football spot - regardless of where that side stands in the table. That's certainly something they'll be keeping in mind between now and May.

Eintracht Frankfurt

Number of DFB-Pokal-titles: 5 (1974, 1975, 1981, 1988, 2018)

Current rank in Bundesliga: 12

Eintracht Frankfurt notably beat Bayern in the DFB-Pokal final in 2018 to clinch their first win since 1998. They were then, ironically, under the tutelage of Croatian manager Niko Kovac, who would then move on to the Allianz Arena the following season, only to be sacked near the end of 2019 after Bayern's poor showing in the Champions League. It goes without saying that they will certainly be hoping to stage another deep run in this competition after their heroics of 2018.

Hertha Berlin

Number of DFB-Pokal-titles: 0

Current rank in Bundesliga: 14

Hertha Berlin, like Union Berlin have never won the DFB-Pokal, although they've finished as runners-up twice. What better way than to finally win it in their home city? They, also, have been kind of plodding along this term and as of now, aren't in danger of the drop either. Still, they do find themselves in an interesting position. Two games, and there's the final. Will they try to make a late push?

Bayern Munich

Number of DFB-Pokal-titles: 19 (1957, 1966, 1967, 1969, 1971, 1982, 1984, 1986, 1998, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2019)

Current rank in Bundesliga: 1

And last, but certainly not least, there's Bayern Munich. No team has won this cup more times than die Roten, so they will always be the favorites. They have had their struggles this term, and will come into this game facing a big blow with an injury to a star player. Nonetheless, Bayern are still the team to beat, and it will be very interesting to see what happens once the dust settles following the latest installment of fixtures coming up over the next 48 hours.
