Lyon makes Champions League history with Juventus win

February 26, 2020 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Ligue 1 outfit secured an impressive milestone in Wednesday night's home triumph.

Olympique Lyon has staged one of the shocks of this season's UEFA Champions League by defeating Juventus in Wednesday's Round of 16 tie. The French Ligue 1 outfit entered the competition's history books with its first-ever win over the Bianconeri as a result of Lucas Tousart’s first half-goal.

For only the second time in the ongoing campaign, Juventus was held scoreless despite entering the encounter with a star-studded lineup. The Old Ladies were practically kept at bay as they failed to manage a single shot on target. However, their nemesis successfully landed two, with the one by Lucas Tousart in the 31st minute proving to be the decider.

In essence, Lyon grabbed their first win over Juve in six encounters. The latter had won four of the previous meetings while just one had ended in a draw.

On the contrary, Maurizio Sarri's side exit France with a rather unsavory feat. The reigning Serie A champions have so far played five Champions League knockout games since Cristiano Ronaldo joined the club and, bar the 1-0 defeat to Lyon, no player has produced a goal other than the Portuguese in those outings.

Relatively, Juventus failed to land a shot on target in a UEFA Champions League game for the first time since the 2004/2005 season. It is only the third time in the club's history.
