Piqué gives insight on Barca's UCL chances

Piqué disagrees with Messi regarding the team's chances of success in this year's UCL

February 24, 2020 By Oscar Rojas
The Spanish center back discussed how the eliminations against Roma and Liverpool could play a key role in the outcome of Tuesday's clash.

Lionel Messi is the undisputed leader inside Barcelona's dressing room, but this time, one of his closest friends disagreed on his views regarding how Los Culés will fare in the 2019-20 UEFA Champions League.

Speaking in the pre-match presser before the clash against Napoli, defender and Barcelona co-captain Gerard Pique did not share Messi's views on how the team would perform in the UEFA Champions League, after the Argentine admitted that he did not see Barcelona as one of the top candidates to win the title this year.

The center back stated that even if Los Culés can't be considered as favorites as they were before, he admitted that the club could shock their naysayers with each passing game.

"It's true that we get to this stage in sort of an underdog position. We used to get here on a higher note. Maybe we are not the top candidates to win, but we do have a good chance to win. We have to go step by step and then we'll see," Piqué said, in clear contradiction of what Messi said last week.

The former Manchester United player discussed how the team will prepare for Tuesday's match trying to avoid a shocking elimination such as the ones suffered at the hands of Roma and Liverpool in the past couple of years.

"We will never forget it. It's in the wrong side of this team's history. We have learned from those losses. We will roll with the punches and we will deal with whatever comes our way, and we know that we could have problems if we enter tomorrow's match with a wrong attitude," Piqué added.

The player concluded his appearance in front of the media with a insight on how this game could have an effect on the rest of the season, including Sunday's Clásico.

"Each game has an effect on those that come next. Tomorrow's result will influence how we face the game at the Bernabeu. Two weeks ago, we faced Betis trailing Real Madrid by six, and now it's a different ballgame. We can just hope that these games help our team's growth," Piqué concluded.
