Another Premier League round, another VAR farce. For the second game in a row, Chelsea have ended on the short-end of the stick involving the poorly-implemented Video Assistant Referee, with the latest controversy occurring in their clash with Spurs.
The Blues hosted Tottenham in Saturday’s early kick-off for a crucial fixture in the heated top-four race and marched to a 2-0 lead after 48 minutes of play. However, fans were understandably enraged due to an incident between Azpilicueta and Lo Celso.
In a tussle for the ball, the Argentine midfielder blatantly caught the Spanish defender with his study, stamping on the full-back’s shin with a possible leg-breaking tackle Fortunately, after receiving treatment, Cesar was able to continue but the failure to send off Lo Celso caused an uproar.
The incident was referred to VAR, with the officials behind the screen checking for serious foul play. However, they decided that the tackle did not merit a sending off, nor was it a serious foul play in their eyes, meaning there was no pitchside review. Check out the best reactions to this controversy below.

No red card for Lo Celso for stamp on Azpilicueta. VAR review for serious foul play so it's a red card or nothing.

Michael Olivier doesn't view himself on pitchside monitor
So Maguire wasn’t deemed to be violent conduct and Lo Celso not serious foul play. Awful use of VAR.

This was NOT given as a red card.#CHETOT | #VAR pic.twitter.com/bzfrUd8z6j
No red for that Lo Celso “alleged stamp” - one of the worst VAR calls this season (and there are many) pic.twitter.com/T1LMIirc0Q

Not sure how the VAR system is supposed to help refs if the guy in charge is discouraged from watching incidents on the monitor. Michael Oliver stood around while VAR ref watches Lo Celso challenge at Stockley Park. And gets it wrong...

That has to be a red for Lo Celso on Azpilicueta. Not given (VAR involved). Michael Oliver a good official (in a very average English generation), so encourage him to use the monitor. VAR all over the place again. #CHETOT

This is a disgrace from VAR. it’s just pathetic— (@Rey_Blues30) February 22, 2020

Unbelievable. VAR decides the potential leg-break tackle on Azpilicueta, by Lo Celso, is not a red card. That's surely a dismissal, all day long?
— Dan Levene (@danlevene) February 22, 2020
And in waving a re-start to the game, Michael Oliver clouts Barkley about the head. Send that one to VAR?
Who ever is operating VAR should be removed. Laughing stock.

Wow. If you disagree don’t blame the tech...blame the process.

David Coote (not VAR) made the decision...but why not ask the ref to go and look at the screen https://t.co/L5BrhXKWhe
4 VAR decisions against us in 2 games. Campaign against Chelsea.

VAR will be VAR pic.twitter.com/uYD2hBLM8i

The explanation afterward was that there was no serious foul play as Lo Celso had nowhere else to plant his foot and thus could not avoid Azpilicueta’s shin. Nonetheless, this has not gone down well with fans and experts, especially given that Maguire also escaped a red card despite kicking out at Batshuayi and catching him in the balls in Chelsea’s 2-0 loss to Man Utd.
We have asked why VAR did not give a red card for that Lo Celso incident. We have been told 'it wasn't a clear and obvious error because VAR didn't feel there was anywhere else for him to put his foot'. Give me strength.
