Robertson fires warning shot at Atletico

Robertson fires warning shot at Atletico after Liverpool’s 1-0 UCL loss in Madrid

February 19, 2020 By Ali M.
The Scottish defender warned the Spanish giants of what awaits them in the second leg.

On Tuesday, Atletico Madrid enjoyed a hard-fought win over Liverpool in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16. However, despite the result, Reds ace Andy Robertson has fired a warning shot at the Spanish giants.

The game panned out just as Simeone’s side wanted. They took an early lead thanks to Saul’s strike in the fourth minute and were ready to defend their lead. The Merseyside giants dominated the game for the most part but everyone knew that once Los Rojiblancos went ahead, they were comfortable to see the result out.

The Atletico players were celebrating at full time but this did not sit well with Liverpool sensational left-back, with the Scottish defender reminding the opposition that the tie is not yet over. Furthermore, he aimed a dig at Simeone’s men who appeared eager to get Sadio Mane sent off after the Senegalese ace picked up an early yellow card.

“They celebrated as if they won the tie after the game so let’s see,” Robertson told BT Sport, as per the Daily Mail.

“We have a couple of weeks and Premier League business to take care of. They are coming back to Anfield, we know our fans will be there, we know we will be there, it is up to them to be there.

“They can start falling over and trying to get under our skin like they did, I think we handled it well with them falling over quite easy, we got on with it.

“We put in a decent performance tonight but we know we can be better and luckily we have a second leg to put it right.”

After the game, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp spoke against Atletico’s tactics. Despite Simeone’s effective game plan – Salah and Co. failed to get a single short on target – the German boss wasn’t pleased with his opponents. Nonetheless, he warned them about what awaits them in the second leg.

“As long as we can get 11 players in a Liverpool shirt we will try with all we have. For all Atletico fans who have got a ticket, welcome to Anfield,” he added. “It’s halftime, we’re 1-0 down, we wouldn’t give up if we had 15 minutes of half time so why should we when we have three weeks, and even better, the second half will be played in our stadium.”
