Chelsea vs Liverpool: The road to FA Women's Cup fifth round

Emma Hayes' Chelsea comes into this match enjoying an almost perfect season. Losing one FA Women's League Cup match and drawing two in the FA WSL, The Blues are plotting to win a domestic treble.

Hayes won the Barclays FA WSL Manager of the Month award in January while her star forward, Bethany England, claimed the Player of the Month award. The forward has scored 11 goals in eight matches having scored a goal in every league match since November 24, 2019. Nonetheless, Chelsea will seek revenge from a 1-1 draw dating back to December 15, 2019, the last time they dropped points in the league.

Vicky Jepson's Liverpool, on the other hand, wishes it had a 'season restart' button at their disposal. Losing 10, nine in league play, out of their 19 matches in all competitions, Liverpool find themselves in a hole being knocked out of the FA Women's League Cup, second to last in the FA WSL and now facing Chelsea in the quarterfinals of the FA Women's Cup.

Liverpool has struggled to score goals but has defended its goal relatively well. To put it into perspective, Jepson's squad has lost eight of their 10 losses by minimal difference. In a constant struggle to score goals, Liverpool has found the back of the net six times in 13 games, but they have defended well as they have only conceded 16 – the other bottom five teams average 29 goals against.

Hayes knows about Liverpool's gorilla warfare antics. Sit back, defend and counter with pace. It has clearly worked out for the Jepson defensively allowing few goals, but they are not having enough opportunities in front of the goal. Chelsea has the firepower and morale to destroy anything that stands in its way including a bus parked in front of the frame.

Chelsea vs Liverpool: head-to-head

Chelsea has been dominant over Liverpool since 2010. This matchup has produced three draws, 15 victories for Chelsea and four for Liverpool since the turn of the last century.

The last match between the two sides ended in a draw in December 2019. Liverpool has not collected a win over Chelsea since a 2-0 win in August 2014. Furthermore, The Reds have lost 11 since.

Players to watch

Beth England – Chelsea

The winner of the FA WSL Player of the Month award will look to get on the scoresheet since as she did back in December 15, 2019. The striker scored an equalizer in the 15th minute that was not enough to give Chelsea the win. She's playing better than ever now and she will be looking to avenge their last game this upcoming Monday.

Rachel Furness – Liverpool

The Northern Ireland international has been a key player for Jepson since her arrival from Reading in the January transfer window. She has been the top scorer for Liverpool in the FA WSL since the turn of the year scoring two goals in three matches including a screamer against Arsenal last week and a winner in their only league win over Bristol.
