Messi's drought complicates Barca's season

Messi's goalscoring drought means good AND bad news for Barcelona

February 15, 2020 By Oscar Rojas
The Blaugrana side may have won, but their star man's performances was far from being the best.

Lionel Messi's form has been quite surprising for fans and experts, as he is experiencing his largest goalscoring drought in four years.

The Argentine ace completed another La Liga game without scoring. In fact, since Quique Setién's arrival, "La Pulga" has only found the back of the net once (vs Granada). Since then, the South American has gone blank against Valencia (2-0 loss), Levante (2-1 win), Betis (3-2 win) and Getafe (2-1 win).

But even if those numbers are worrying, his assists tally has risen to 12. No player in La Liga has handed out more this season.

"Messi gets to four full La Liga games without scoring. He hadn't experienced such a streak since April 2016. In those four games, Messi has handed out six assists, something that he hadn't been able to do since April-May 2016.

So, is this good news for Barcelona? Not entirely. Barcelona's only win with a two-goal margin since Setién's arrival took place in the Copa del Rey, when they destroyed Leganés 5-0. Messi's goal contribution will be key to leapfrog Real Madrid in the title race. Moreover, Messi will have to end this hoodoo as soon as possible due to Luis Suárez's absence and the lack of a proper No. 9.

So, what's the good news? That even without their big man scoring goals, Barcelona has won three in a row. The team is still in contention to win La Liga, and their goal difference numbers are not that bad.

And what's the bad news? Well, having a multi-talented team narrowly winning their games is not a good sign. The "Messi-dependence" is in full effect at Barcelona, with games such as their 2-0 loss vs Valencia backing this clam.

With a number of games taking place in the next two weeks, it seems that Barcelona will need some extra help to keep their chances alive in both La Liga and the UEFA Champions League.
