Vissel Kobe ended up lifting the trophy but only after an embarrassing penalty shootout which saw nine consecutive misses.

Today, Andres Iniesta added another piece of silverware to his decorated trophy candidate. The Spanish icon led Vissel Kobe to a Fuji Xerox Super Cup final win over Yokohama FM, beating their rivals in one of the most dramatic and eye-catching penalty shootouts.

What made this one stand out? After the game ended in a 3-3 draw, penalties were the only way to decide the winner. However, the shootout saw the finalists miss nine consecutive spot kicks – yes, nine!

Both Vissel and Yokohoma converted their first two efforts with, with Iniesta taking and scoring the first penalty for his side. With everything tied at 2-2, here is where the farce began.

From those nine misses, only three were saved by a goalkeeper, with the rest either smashing into the woodwork or blazing over the crossbar. After heading into sudden death, another three penalties were missed before Hotaru Yamaguchi to bring an end to this drama at 3-2.
