Women's League Cup: Preview and how to watch Manchester United vs Chelsea on Jan 29, 2020

January 28, 2020 By Juan Aguerrevere
The preview for this Continental Cup semi-final fixture between Manchester United and Chelsea will go over their head-to-head record, team statistics and the broadcast listings including where and how to watch the match.

The FA Women's League Cup has not lived through many surprises as its current semifinalist happen to be the top four FA Women's Super League sides. Manchester United will host Chelsea on January 29, 2020, at the Leigh Sports Village Stadium in Manchester.

Match Preview

Casey Stoney's Manchester United arrives at this semi-final stage as the only side without dropping a single match. The Red Devils have compiled four wins in this FA Women's League Cup campaign while Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City have only tasted defeat once. United even managed to deal City's only loss of the competition in the second edition of the Manchester Derby on October 20, 2019, earning the Reds a first-place spot on Group C.

Chelsea, on the other hand, suffered a loss in its final group stage match against Reading on penalties after a 1-1 draw. On the upside for the Blues, they have not lost a match since that defeat, which dates to December 11, 2019, having won five of their last six. This undefeated streak includes an avenging 3-1 win against The Royals (Reading) and a thumping 4-1 away win against Arsenal making it a superb way to enter this stage of the competition.

Players to watch

Lauren James – Manchester United

There will be a bit of tension amongst the James family on this upcoming Wednesday evening as Lauren James goes up against her brother's, Reece James, Chelsea.

James has been electric since Stoney introduced her to Manchester United's first team. Her pace, ability on the ball and drive to go forward with strength is hard to deal with as a defender. The 18-year-old forward has started 7 out of 10 FA Women's Super League matches and found the back of the net five times. She came off the bench and scored a goal in the Red Devils' controversial 3-2 defeat at home to Manchester City during the weekend.

This young lady sure knows how to make the best out of opportunities, and she'll seek this match against Chelsea as a great opportunity to grow and shine.

Sam Kerr – Chelsea

Samantha Kerr is getting used to the life in England. On her first match with the Blues, the Australian awed spectators by connecting a backheel wall pass for forward Bethany England to score. That assist marked the beginning of more to come.

Kerr followed-up that assist with a trademark header goal that doubled Chelsea's lead against Arsenal on January 19. That match ended 4-1 with the Blues coming out on top and edging them closer to the top of the FA WSL table – currently sits third with 32 points while Arsenal and Man City lead with 33 – with a game in hand.

The 26-year-old is addicted to scoring and a goal in a semi-final match against Man United is exactly what she is hungry for.

These two sides have just met once before due to the short existence of Manchester United' women's team.

Their only meeting took place at Kingsmeadow on November 2019. Chelsea sought out a victory by minimal difference via a Maren Mjelde penalty. Nevertheless, it was a well-fought match where Man UTD matched up to Chelsea.

The Blues had 13 shots, five on target, 55% possession, 74% pass accuracy and eight corners, while the Reds had eight shots, three on target, 45% possession, 74% pass accuracy and seven corners. Not bad at all for a newly promoted team.

Manchester United has plans to be an FA WSL title contender next season and this is a perfect opportunity for them to set the table straight.
