Man Utd makes history with six goals vs Tranmere

Manchester United matches 128-year-old record with 6-0 win over Tranmere Rovers

January 26, 2020 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Red Devils staged a romping against the League One side to progress to the next round of the FA Cup.

Manchester United successfully got English top-flight football's history books revised with its scoring spree against Tranmere Rovers on Sunday. The Red Devils bagged five goals in a remarkable first half display before concluding the tie with a 6-0 victory inside Prenton Park.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men went into the encounter on the back of back to back defeats to Liverpool and Burnley but managed to end the losing run ahead of their EFL Cup semi-final showdown with rivals Manchester City. It was skipper of the side Harry Maguire who opened the scoring with his first-ever United goal before Diogo Dalot replicated the feat with his side's second.

Jesse Lingard ensured that the Old Trafford outfit was up by three in the 16th minute before Phil Jones got in on the action with his first goal in almost six years. Anthony Martial scored the Reds' fifth right on the half-time mark and 18-year-old Mason Greenwood completed the cruise with a penalty kick in the 56th minute to become the youngest player to score 10 goals in a single season since Norman Whiteside in 1984.

On the grand scale, the final outcome of Sunday's clash suggested that for the first time since beating Wolves 10-1 in October 1892, Manchester United had six different goalscorers in a top-flight game. In addition, the Red Devils recorded their biggest away win in any competition since defeating Nottingham Forest 8-1 in February 1999. Current boss of the side Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored four times in the clash.
