Setien shares worrying analisys on 1st Barca loss

Setién raises some eyebrows with words after first loss as Blaugrana boss

January 25, 2020 By Oscar Rojas
The former Real Betis tactician shared his views right after the 2-0 defeat against Los Naranjeros, which could see them lose the top spot of the table.

Perhaps Quique Setién has not realized the type of team he's coaching right now. His words right after the game could get him a bit in trouble with some of his players, but even so, some experts believe he's hit the nail on its head.

The Blaugrana boss stepped up to face the music right after his first defeat with the Catalan club, and he shared a worrying insight on why the team lost its fourth game of the season away from home. Setién's words have to be surprising to some, considering that some of the best players in the world are under his command right now.

"There are some things they are not reading well, or maybe we are not explaining ourselves properly. We're passing the ball just to get rid of it, not to damage our rival, and that's not what we want the team to do. There are things we need to improve. Honestly, watching the first half end with a goalless draw was the best thing that could have happened to us," Setién said.

Setién went on to name one player in particular who had a woeful performance.

"De Jong has not had the best of games. But it wasn't just him, it was also the rest of the team. They are not getting what their team-mates are doing, and Frenkie in particular had been playing in a certain way during the past few months, and now we're asking other things from him," Setién added.

The Spaniard asked his supporters for a bit of time to reflect the work he's been doing with his new players.

"We are taking under consideration the position each player had and the understanding they have on our general idea. It's one thing to see it on the board and a totally different one to do it on the pitch. We did not find our place in the first half, and while we improved during the second half, we still have room left for improvement," Setién concluded.
