The Stars and Stripes are keen on winning their fifth Olympic qualifier in a row to later redeem themselves from their only medal-less Olympic Games in 2016. Nonetheless, the U.S. needs to take it one step at a time to not get carried away once again.
As for Carli Lloyd, she has the most Olympic qualifying experience playing 14 matches throughout three qualifiers – 2008, 2012 and 2016. The 37-year-old is at the brink of drawing level in Olympic qualifying goals with legendary American forward Abby Wambach. The University of Florida graduate holds the USWNT record of 14 while Lloyd has 12. Having won gold in 2008 and 2012, The New Jersey native is looking forward to having another successful qualifier to relive olympic gold.
Team USA held a January training camp in Tampa, Florida, that came to an end on January 15 and 20 players were chosen, all of whom are under contract with NWSL teams. Eighteen of the 20 footballers featured in the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup and 13 still have a bad taste in their mouths from that early knockout in Brazil 2016.
