Neuer threatens to leave Bayern this summer

Manuel Neuer set to leave Bayern München after argument with team exec

January 16, 2020 By Oscar Rojas
The German goalkeeper seems determined to hold on to Die Roten's No.1 spot, even if the club is already thinking about life after him.

The end of the winter break in the Bundesliga brought some disturbing news for Bayern München fans, as Manuel Neuer has reportedly threatened to leave the team this summer due to a dispute with one of his bosses.

According to the information published by France Football, the goalkeeper had a heated argument with sports director Hasan Salihamidzic over the signing of Alexander Nübel, a 23-year-old shot-stopper who is seen as Neuer's replacement both with the team and in Die Mannschaft.

The French magazine suggests that Neuer got angry at Salihamidzic for including a clause in Nübel's contract that forces the club to give him a chance to start in 15 games, something that Neuer saw as an insult to his status as the team's No.1 choice.

The argument between Neuer and the former midfielder reportedly had the goalie stating that "he was ready to play all games, including friendlies," so that Nübel would not see a minute of playing time. Bayern's exec was not satisfied by the tone used by Neuer, and an exit from the Bavarian club could be in the cards.

The 33-year-old Neuer has played 26 games this season in all competitions, conceding 31 goals. While still a reliable player, Neuer's time at Bayern seems to be coming to an end, but the shot-stopper does not seem ready to surrender his spot, and given this rant, we could very well be watching Neuer's final months with Die Roten.

In fact, France Football suggests that Juventus has already stepped up to hand in an offer for the goalkeeper's services, which would see him team up with Wojciech Szczesny and Gianluigi Buffon, the duo guarding the Old Lady's net.

It's early to say if Neuer will leave Bayern this summer, but the wind of change that saw Robben and Ribery leave the club in the offseason could also mark the end of Neuer's era as Bayern's No.1 choice under the sticks.
