This is the first time this has happened in eight years after the shock loss at Stamford Bridge against the Saints.

This wasn’t a Boxing Day to remember for Chelsea. Despite putting in a masterclass performance away to Tottenham over the weekend, the Blues suffered a surprise defeat at home to Southampton.

To make things worse, the Saints came away with all three points from Stamford Bridge with top scorer Danny Ings starting on the bench. Goals from Obafemi and Redmond earned the visitors an impressive 2-0 win against the Premier League giants.

This result is crucial for Southampton in their fight to survive as it puts them three points clear of the relegation zone. On the flip side, it was a disappointing result for Chelsea who are letting their grip on the fourth and final Champions League spot slip – Tottenham are only three points behind.

The defeat also saw Lampard’s side set an unwanted feat. This is the first time in just over eight years that the Blues have lost back-to-back Premier League home games, a first since November 2011 under Andre Villas-Boas. It is also the first time they have lost successive games at Stamford Bridge without scoring since 1998.

This is just another setback for a Chelsea side in poor form. This is their fifth defeat in their last seven English top-flight games, which is worrying for the London giants. Next up for Abraham and Co. is a trip to Arsenal in Sunday’s highly-anticipated London derby.
