The Frenchman touched on these topics ahead of Sunday's clash with Athletic Club.

Real Madrid are gearing up for a crucial league clash with Athletic Club on Sunday. Ahead of the game, Zinedine Zidane spoke of the club’s previous tie: El Clasico.

Los Blancos traveled to Barcelona on Wednesday for the highly-anticipated showdown but the game ended in a goalless draw. The Frenchman touched on the VAR controversy, as the Madrid giants were denied two penalty shouts.

Despite this, their French boss isn’t focused on that. "In the end, the past is the past," Zidane said, as per Marca.

"VAR is important. It's technology, it's a plus for football, but it could certainly improve. Everyone wants to improve it and I'm sure it will. Everyone makes mistakes.”

When asked if the club will make an official complaint regarding the officiating in that game, Zizou stated: "No. What interests me is the match tomorrow [against Athletic Club].

"The past is the past. The coaches, players and club are focussed on the match tomorrow.”

The 1998 World Cup winner did not only speak of tomorrow’s game but touched upon their Champions League round of 16 match-up. The 13-time champions were drawn against Man City in the knockout stage, with the Frenchman hailing Citizens boss Pep Guardiola as the best manager in the world.

"It will be special to go up against him. I played against him lots of times," the Real Madrid boss added.

"I respect him as a player and as a coach because I think he's the best coach in the world.

"He's proved that during his career and I'm looking forward to going up against him and facing his team."
