Man City vs Leicester City: Preview, match facts, broadcast listings - December 21

December 20, 2019 By Michelle Bonsu
Manchester City will look to close the gap on high-flying Leicester City as the two sides lock horns on Saturday.

Preview: Manchester City vs Leicester City

It's been a very difficult season for reigning champions Manchester City, who come into this game a whopping 14 points behind Liverpool. They've already lost four times this term, and Jurgen Klopp's men have a game in hand due to their participation in the Club World Cup. Pep Guardiola's side could close the gap to 11 points should they win their upcoming game, but they will be taking on a Leicester side who have been in truly impressive form under Brendan Rodgers. The Foxes certainly are in contention for a Champions League berth and haven't even ruled themselves out of the title race as we are not even at the midway point of the season, despite the fact that Liverpool still have yet to lose a Premier League match in the 2019/2020 campaign.

The visitors come into this game having secured their place in the next round of the Carabao Cup following a spot-kick shootout victory over Everton, and have won four of their last five league games. Certainly, not having to feature in European competition has worked to Leicester's full advantage this term, as they have been able to focus all their efforts on domestic affairs and keep their squad largely healthy for the most part. Star striker Jamie Vardy is back to his very best, with 16 goals so far in the league putting him well ahead of his rivals in the race for the top scorers' prize at the end of this season.

Meanwhile, City cruised to a relatively comfortable 3-1 win over League One side Oxford United in their League Cup clash, easily brushed aside Arsenal 3-0 in the league, and wrapped up their Champions League group stage campaign with a comprehensive 4-1 rout of struggling Croatian outfit Dinamo Zagreb to easily top their quartet seven points ahead of Italian debutants Atalanta.

Team news: Manchester City vs Leicester City

Manchester City: David Silva is still out following a leg injury sustained during the Manchester Derby. Leroy Sane has returned to light training but won't feature. However, both Sergio Aguero and John Stones may feature after returning to full training with the team.

Leicester City: Only Matty James will miss this match as he continues his rehab treatment following an Achilles injury, meaning that Rodgers will have a full-strength squad available for selection.
