Real looking to avoid 21st-century record

Real Madrid looking to avoid unwanted 21st-century record in Club Brugge clash

December 11, 2019 By Ali M.
The last time Los Blancos faced Club Brugge, they barely came away with a draw.

Real Madrid are gearing up for their final group-stage game of this Champions League season. Los Blancos have already secured progression, meaning there isn’t much at stake, but Zidane’s side still have one important reason for wanting a worthy result.

The Spanish giants boast only eight points and should they lose to Club Brugge, this will be their worst points tally in the group stage of this competition in the 21st century. Zizou would not want to make history for all the wrong reasons.

The worst-ever tally after Matchday 6 is nine points back in 2002/03, meaning a draw would see them equal that record. Zidane was a Real Madrid player back when they set that unwanted feat 17 years ago.

Regardless of what happens, this will be their worst group-stage campaign under the French boss. In the three in which they won consecutive European titles, they racked up 16, 12, and 13 points in the first hurdle.

The last time the 13-time champions faced Club Brugge, they had to fight from 2-0 down to pick up a point. An 85th-minute goal from Casemiro spared them the blushes but a lot has changed since then.

The Bernabeu side are unbeaten in their last nine games, drawing twice and winning every other game. Eden Hazard will not be available for this encounter but the club showed over the weekend that they can cope without the Belgian, beating Espanyol 2-0.
