Breaking: Napoli sacks Carlo Ancelotti

Breaking: Napoli sacks Carlo Ancelotti hours after leading the club to UCL knockout phase

December 10, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Italian manager's reign is finally over.

Italian Serie A side Napoli has finally sacked head coach Carlo Ancelotti. The news of the 60-year-old manager's dismissal comes almost three hours after guiding the club to this season's UEFA Champions League knockout phase.

On Tuesday night, the 60-year-old Italian manager guided the Partenopei to its first win in 10 matches with the team's winless run spanning across almost two months. With the 4-0 home win over Genk, his side concurrently qualified out of Group E as the second-placed side behind defending champions Liverpool.

Nevertheless, what subsequently ensued indicated that the day's result had no significance on the fate of Carlo Ancelotti who took over from Maurizio Sarri as head coach in 2018. In the aftermath of the European cup game, the former Bayern Munich and Real Madrid boss revealed that he was eager to continue at the club ahead of the weekend's clash with Parma, squashing any rumors of an imminent resignition.

"I hope so," Ancelotti told Sky Sport Italia when asked if he would be in his job for Saturday's game.

"It's something I have to evaluate with the president and we will meet tomorrow. I don't know anything about contact with other coaches, we just focused on the game.

"[On Wednesday] there will be a meeting agreed by mutual consent to evaluate the situation as it stands right now.

"I have never resigned in my life and I never will. This team has quality and proved that in the Champions League, whereas we haven't been able to yet in Serie A."

Despite Ancelotti's stance, Napoli issued a statement a few hours after Tuesday's win to announce the club's decision tp part ways with the Italian.

Ancelotti departs Napoli with a record of 38 wins, 19 draws and 16 defeats from 73 matches. It has been speculated that former AC Milan manager Gennaro Gattuso could fill in the vacant managerial position soon.
