Deyna Castellanos experiments with Twitter poll

Women's Football: Venezuela's Deyna Castellanos experiments with Twitter poll for career move

December 4, 2019 By Juan Aguerrevere
Venezuela's Deyna Castellanos asked fans what professional league should be her first via Twitter and they were vocal

The most exciting women's football prospect in the world, Deyna Castellanos, arrived to the United States in 2016 to embark on a journey that proven superstars don't usually take or fulfill. Castellanos chose to pursue a bachelor's degree at Florida State University while playing at the collegiate level over a premature professional football career. A decision that raised eyebrows around the globe.

Castellanos is now days away from graduating, and she wants to hear fans voice their opinions as to where they would like her to play in her first professional stint.

"Big decisions ahead. Where would you like to see me play in my first stage as a professional? I'll listen. Leave a comment for other options."

The 24-hour poll received a huge turnout with over 25,000 votes voicing what fans think her best option could be.

It was not a surprise to see the Primera Division (women) take up more than half of the votes as Barcelona and Real Madrid are the two most followed European clubs in Venezuela. A move to Barcelona would be a great option for Castellanos given her pristine technical ability that would fit the vintage Catalan football culture. Her presence in a Spanish club would expedite the league's already fast-paced growth.

The remaining results of the poll are as eye-opening as Castellanos' decision to play in college instead of going pro.

The Division 1 Feminine was left in the dust with only 9% of the votes going its way, despite being home to the world's best women's club team, Olympique Lyonnais. A move to Lyon would secure the young Venezuelan French titles as well as a Champions League glory given Lyon's outstanding domestic and European record. With this being said, why was the vote so low? Probably because most of the voters are uninformed as to how competitive the French league is at the women's level, and the lack of popularity the league has in Venezuela.

The Barclays FA Women's Super League came in second with 22% of the votes. Top English sides like Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City would welcome Castellanos with open arms and the money she's looking for. Sam Kerr, the top scorer of the NWSL last season, made her move from the Chicago Red Stars to Chelsea on November 13. Kerr will be making over $400,000, about the same ammount that Lyon pays the former Ballon d'Or winner, Ada Hegerberg.

Last but not least, literally, the Liga MX Femenil came in third with a surprising 15% of votes. Monterrey and Tigres UANL fans were adamant in their interest on the Venezuelan goal machine in the replies to the tweet. The league has just seen its most competitive year with Monterey and Tigres spearheading the table. With no surprise, these two sides are in the second leg of the final after drawing the first leg one-all on November 29. The arrival of Castellano to either of these teams will probably create some separation between them next season.

All in all, Castellanos is looking for top quality football as well as good payment. On November 1, the Venezuelan ace expressed her distaste for the NWSL on how the league pays international players less via Twitter; Hence why she didn't include the NWSL in the poll.

Funny enough, the NWSL revealed a new set of rules designed to keep and attract the world's best players on that same day. According to a press release, the league increased its salary cap by 19%, in other words, a player's maximum salary has jumped from 2019's $46,200 to $50,000 in 2020. These numbers will not interest Castellanos who knows she is worth six figures.
