The Rakuten documentary which followed Barcelona last season has been gaining tons of attraction, with the latest episode showing behind-the-scenes clip of their infamous trip to Anfield in the Champions League last season.

The Blaugrana took on the Reds in the semi-finals last season, marching to a 3-0 lead in the first leg. However, a repeat of the Rome disaster happened, with the Catalan giants bottling yet another European game after suffering an embarrassing 4-0 defeat at Liverpool’s home ground.

The footage released by Rakuten shows why this remontada occurred as none of the players looked mentally ready for the challenge. Some even appeared defeated by half-time, with Barcelona trailing 1-0 but still winning 3-1 on aggregate. One player was even in tears during the break.

That man was Jordi Alba. The Spaniard was at fault for the opening goal which handed the Reds hope and the momentum, as an ill-advised back pass led to the Catalan giants conceding. The left-back was visibly distraught at half time and had to be consoled.

Before kick-off, Messi gave the team a rallying speech, bringing up the shambolic away defeat at Roma in 2017/18. The captain warned his team-mates not to repeat the embarrassment, calling for everyone to be focused.

“Come on people. We are going to take a step forward,” the five-time Ballon d’Or winner said. “We can’t waste this opportunity, OK?

“Give everything, now that we are here.

“We have to start strong. Remember, Rome was our fault. Nobody else’s.”
